The new phone for work is a Vodafone V1240. The phone runs Windows CE 5.
Work paying for the contract is of course pleasant, but I'm not sure if I like the handset yet, I have yet to decide if the interface is hard for me because it's different to what I am used to, or if it' is just rubbish. A bit more of learning curve, a bit more like a computer rather than a consumer device.
Major frustrations so far: No automatic keylock. I mean, like, hello? This is a basic feature here. Fortunately I have found this automatic keylock program here that seems to do the job just fine. However having a basic feature provided (without source or warranty) by a hacker called "maniac" does not exactly inspire confidence, even if it does have a nifty screensaver feature.
No flexible alarm. The alarm has been set to off at 7am, and that's all I can do - it goes off or it doesn't. No ifs, no buts. No exceptions for the weekend, unless you remember to turn it off on Friday, and back on again on Sunday. No second alarm. Really, I expected better, Nokias and Sony-Eriksons's can all do more, and I want it. I need it. If I can't find a program that does this, I'll have to write it myself, or stop using the handset. I'm serious on that.
OK, now from further searches I see that I could buy it in pack, but why pay money for other stuff that I don't want in order to get what a five-year old Nokia can do?
I haven't yet figured out how to use an MP3 as the ring tone, a feature of my last phone to which I became quite attached. I hope it's possible. Or to put wallpaper on it, but this will come when I poke around more. I only got ActiveSync - which could also be more straightforward - working last night.
The possibility of running my hone grown C# programs on the phone (using .Net compact framework) is an appealing one, and may prove to be a saving grace of a thus-far annoying handset.

* There is no indication that you've missed a call or have an SMS, unless you turn the screen on to check. (Apparently the green LED blinks every two seconds instead of three seconds, but get real.. like i'm going to carry a stopwatch to check that?)
* The keys are locked once the screen turns off, which occurs after a configurable period. That's fine, except that when you get a call/sms/alarm, it turns the screen back on.. where it's usually in your pocket, and thus never turns off again due to the screen being constantly tapped as you walk.
Does WinCE 2005 still have those issues?
I like having a phone that can run a lot of software, but FOR FUCKS SAKE! It's the worst mobile phone platform I have ever seen in my life. (And having to hit the hard reset button every few days? Sometimes multiple times a day? Not impressed with that either..)
The keylocker that I linked above has a clock, missed-call & SMS notification and other toys on the screensaver (sceen that comes up when you press a key), which is nice.
I'll keep an eye out for that call-to-unlock issue, haven't come across it yet.
