Having been on four game drives in the Kruger park in two different vehicles (A Toyota 4*4 and a Land Rover, both modified for the purpose), I feel that I am totally qualified to specify a better one.
First it must do what the existing vehicles do:
It must seat around ten people plus light baggage, and put them up high for good viewing. Canopy or roof at the top to keep off rain, open sides for visibility.
It must cope with poor quality dirt roads and steep hills.
It must be able to operate for several hours in heat and cold, dust and damp. E.g. driving for 5 hours in the AM, then 5 hours again in the PM, daily
It must be capable of driving at 50km/h (31 miles/hour). Most game driving is done at around 25km/h, and some racing around in order to get to a radioed sighting is done faster, but the park's speed limit is 50km/h. Current vehicles are over-spec for this. Even faster driving is required for getting to and from the park on the tarred roads, but this is not the core use.
And the improvement: The real downfall of the Land Rover, especially in looking for shy nocturnal animals in the dawn/dusk drives is that it has a big old diesel engine: it's very noisy. Most of the beasts that we saw at night were getting out of our way, and I wonder if the leopards (which we didn't see at all) simply heard us coming first.
We saw lots more animals per hour, and the beasts were calmer and closer to the road, when driving in and out in our automatic-transmission Toyota (a very smooth and quiet new car).
The ideal vehicle for game driving task is very quiet. Perhaps an electric motor vehicle or a hybrid can do this?
